Behind The Scenes

If you’re interested in fashion, drawing, photography, sound design, filmmaking, writing, computer programming or video games, this expo is for you. Step behind the scenes to build your network, meet industry professionals, and plan how to move from being a student to pursuing the career of your dreams. R2R offers Vancouver's only film industry job fair tailored for high school students. Participants include local VFX companies, animation and CGI companies, post-secondary education and training institutes, and film industry unions and guilds. New this year, be sure to check out VR-Domain. World class virtual reality, augmented reality, and 360˚ video will be showcased during the conference.

This event is for school groups and is available by pre-registration only. The Youth Media Conference is a full day comprehensive program from 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM.

Animation and VFX Companies and Studios

Animal Logic has attracted audiences with its visual effects and animation in films like Moulin Rouge, House of Flying Daggers, 300, The Great Gatsby, Happy Feet, Legend of the Guardians, BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs 3D and The LEGO® Movie. Animal Logic's Animation division is currently in production on LEGO Batman (2017) and LEGO Ninjago (2017). In 2015 it opened a new animation studio in Vancouver as part of a three picture deal with Warner Bros. The studio’s first project is be The LEGO® Movie sequel, scheduled for release in 2018.

Atomic Cartoons is an independent full-service animation studio. Atomic creates, produces and finances animation for television series, commercials and music videos. Clients include: Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Walt Disney and Marvel Animation. Original productions include Pirate Express and Atomic Betty, seen in over 180 territories and winning the Annie, Leo, Gemini and Bafta awards.

DHX Media is an animation production company. DHX’s past production partners include: Disney, Cartoon Network, Classic Media, Jetix, YTV, Teletoon and WGBH. Most recent shows include: Kid vs Kat (created by Rob Boutilier, one of the crew), Martha Speaks, Packages from Planet X, Dr. Dimensionpants!, Hasbro’s My Little Pony, Pound Puppies, and Littlest Pet Shop.

Slap Happy Cartoons creates original, funny and sometimes twisted cartoons for both kids and adults. It works with clients from all over the world, which includes development and production partners: Corus Entertainment, Comedy Central, KidsWB!, Canucks Sports and Entertainment, Knowledge Kids Network, and 9 Story Entertainment.

Double Negative is an Academy Award®-winning visual effects company, with facilities in London, Singapore and Vancouver. It has been recognized by the Visual Effects Society for Inception, Sherlock Holmes, and Interstellar, and by BAFTA for Inception, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Interstellar. It won Oscars for Inception, Interstellar, and Ex Machina. They are currently in production of Avengers: Infinity War, Blade Runner 2049, Justice League Part One, Wonder Woman and The Mummy.

Image Engine - This world-class visual effects studio collaborates closely with its clients to provide concept designs, pre-visualization, supervision and visual effects production. Well known for their Academy Award Nominated work on Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, they have gone on to create numerous incredible creatures, epic environments and extraordinary digital effects for a broad range of feature films including Zero Dark Thirty, Jurassic World, Game of Thrones,Independence Day: Resurgence, Logan and Power Rangers.

Founded by George Lucas in 1975 to create the special effects for Star Wars, no other facility of its type existed at the time. Now with locations in San Francisco, Vancouver, London and Singapore, Industrial Light & Magic remains one of the leading effects companies in the world, serving the motion picture commercial production and attraction industries. From its astounding innovations in the original Star Wars trilogy to its groundbreaking CGI work in blockbusters like Jurassic Park, Star Trek, and The Avengers, ILM has changed and expanded the possibilities of what a film can be.

Method Studios is an award-winning international visual effects group with facilities in Canada, the U.S., England and Australia. It services high-end feature film, commercial, television, game and motion graphics clients in the global marketplace. Method Studios provides a full range of visual effects services including: conceptual design, look development, on-set supervision, 3D animation/CGI, matte painting, compositing and finishing. They are currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur.

MPC has offices in London, New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Montreal, Amsterdam, Bangalore and Mexico City, with over 25 years of experience. They provide a variety of creative solutions from Concept Design to Shoot Supervision, 3D/CG Effects, Animation, SOftware Development, and Production. They are known for the Harry Potter franchise, X-Men and Life of Pi. They recently completed work on The Martian, The Jungle Book and Passengers, and are currently working on Wonder Woman, Ghost in the Shell and The Mummy.

Sony Pictures Imageworks is an Academy Award®-winning-winning visual effects and animation unit of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group. It is known for live-action visual effects, dynamic creature and character animation and all-CG animation. The company headquarters is located in Vancouver, B.C. and recently completed work on the features Storks, Ghostbusters, Alice Through The Looking Glass and The Angry Birds Movie. They are currently working on Smurfs: The Lost Village, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Spiderman: Homecoming and Meg.

Zoic Studios is a Visual Effects Company based in Vancouver and California. Its work includes: film, television, advertising, video game and interactive projects. Zoic’s fields of expertise include: design, animation, compositing, and production management.

 

 

Post-Secondary Educational and Training Centres

Capilano University has a variety of programs. The School of Motion Picture Arts offers one-year certificates in Motion Picture Arts, Cinematography for Film and Video, Documentary, and Indigenous Independent Digital Filmmaking; two-year full-time diplomas in Motion Picture Arts, Digital Visual Effects, Costuming for Stage and Screen, 2D Animation + Visual Development, 3D Animation + Games, and Indigenous Independent Digital Filmmaking. The Bachelor of Motion Picture Arts combines practice and protocol in the field, opportunities for technical, aesthetic, and creative innovation, and integrated theoretical and critical perspectives. 

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is the the only specialized, accredited, public, post-secondary university in British Columbia solely devoted to education and research in the creative sector and its associated knowledge economy. Students in the Bachelor of Media Arts degree at Emily Carr University develop the skills and confidence to thrive in 2D and 3D animation, games, visual effects for motion pictures, and independent shorts or animation films.

InFocus Film School - Founded as Pull Focus Film School in 2009, InFocus Film School is an independent film school built on the premise of providing an accelerated education in film arts. InFocus now offers intensive programs in dramatic and documentary film, visual effects, compositing, and screenwriting for film and TV.

Nimbus School of Recording & Media was founded in 2009 to train the next generation of music and media professionals. Students benefit from 24/7 studio access and gear, as well as ongoing mentorship from current music and media professionals and networking opportunities with industry guest lecturers.

Simon Fraser University offers a film program which combines rigorous technical training and skills development with extensive instruction in cinema studies and history. Students draw on courses throughout the school to deepen their understanding of other artistic disciplines. The program is collaborative and cohort-based, leading to long-term peer support and partnership after school, a strategy that has produced a number of prize-winning films. Students learn by making their own films and videos in each year of their program, and begin working with 16mm in their first semester.

University of British Columbia The Theatre and Film program offers four-year undergraduate degrees in Acting, Design and Production, Film Production, Film Studies and Theatre Studies, and includes the option to study in an interdisciplinary environment with creative writing and other university disciplines. Students are taught in a liberal arts context, which prepares them for a wide range of careers, including: costume and set design, theatre production, teaching, curating, filmmaking, writing and arts administration.

Vancouver Institute of Media Arts is one of the world’s most highly respected schools for media and performing arts. Founded in 1995, VanArts offers a variety of one-year diploma programs in Character Animation, Game Art & Design, Visual Effects, Digital Photography, Web Development & Design, Web/Radio/TV Broadcasting and Acting for Film & Television. 

Vancouver Film School offers 13 one-year post-secondary programs spanning every aspect of the entertainment arts. VFS’s educational model balances theory and hands-on production. The faculty consists of established, award-winning professionals who work for top studios. The Advisory Board is composed of  industry leaders who help shape curriculum so student programs stay current.

 

 

Guilds and Unions

IATSE Local 669 is the International Cinematographers Guild of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Local 669 consists of over 650 members involved in all aspects of film and television that pertains to the camera. Membership consists of Directors of Photography, Camera Operators, Camera Assistants, Unit Publicists, Unit Still Photographers, Electronic Camerapeople, Video Assist, Digital Engineers and Technicians, Data Management Technicians and Camera Trainees in all phases of filmed or electronically recorded theatrical feature films, films for television release, Internet and television series productions. It is the mandate of IATSE Local 669 to secure work opportunities, as well as the best conditions and wages for its membership, through collective agreements.

IATSE Local 891 is internationally renowned for its skilled workers and professionalism.  This local consists of artists, technicians, and craftspeople who work primarily in film and television production in BC. There are numerous departments in local 891, some of the entertainment trades and crafts represented are: Accounting, Allied Craft, Art, Construction, Costume, Editing, Extras Casting, First Aid / Craft Service, Greens, Grips, Hair, Lighting / Electrics, Make-Up, Painting, Production Office, Props, Script Supervisors / Continuity Coordinator, Set Decorating, Sound, Special Effects, and Visual Effects.

UBCP / ACTRA represents nearly 5,000 of the most experienced and skilled performers in the world; professional actors, stunt people, singers, dancers, puppeteers, voices, background persons, and a multitude of other types of performers, for every form of recorded media. UBCP members work on everything from feature films to TV, from radio commercials to animated voices, from internet based web-series to performance-capture. As the Union representing performers, UBCP’s number one goal is to create more good work opportunities for its members, and ensure a larger BC film, TV and digital media industry into the future.

 

Resources and Career Advancement Opportunities

Vancouver Public Library's Inspiration Lab is an open access digital media lab at the central library branch downtown. The Lab combines traditional, digital and new media in a custom-built space dedicated to digital creativity, collaboration, and storytelling. It features high-performance computers, analog-to-digital conversion, sound studios, video editing and self-publishing software. This is all for free with your library card! The Lab is a great resource for students to try new software and experiment with the technology that professionals use.
