VR-Domain

Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and 360° Video are some of the new frontiers for innovative storytellers to explore. Creating groundbreaking, immersive experiences in digital realms, Canadian artists are contributing world class work, which very few of us have the opportunity to view. We invite you to three separate events to check out a range of digital work on display: R2R’s opening day events (Sunday Fun Day! and the Opening Night Gala party, on April 8) and Thursday’s Youth Media Conference (April 12). See you in the virtual realm!

theBlu is a deeply immersive VR series that allows audiences to experience the wonder and majesty of the ocean through different habitats and come face to face with some of the most awe inspiring species on the planet. The series has been designed as beautiful moments in passing or a collection of memories that powerfully tap into the vast potential of VR. The debut episode, featuring an incredible close encounter with an 80 foot whale, is already recognized as one the most iconic room scale VR experiences to date (a Sundance Film Festival 2016 selection). Forthcoming episodes will take place on a teeming coral reef and in the very deepest region of the ocean.

Would you like to see the past and future at the same time? It’s a physical and visceral experience which disrupts the ability to remain a passive viewer. Now’s your chance. In this animated, metaphoric tale of timeless wisdom, based on the eponymous short story by Georgi Gospodinov, Academy Award® nominated director Theodore Ushev (The Blind Vaysha, 2015) reminds us of the importance of being in the present moment. Vaysha’s left eye sees only the past and her right sees only the future. Like a terrible curse, her split vision prevents her from seeing the present. Trapped between two irreconcilable temporalities, she is known as the “blind Vaysha.”

Every time we get behind the wheel, we make decisions with life and death implications. Brake or swerve? Quick! Decide! Cardboard Crash is an interactive VR experience that explores whether we’re ready to hand over such ethically fraught decisions to artificial intelligence (AI). In this self-driving vehicle, the passenger is expected to make a split second decision when confronted with an imminent collision. There is plenty of data, but no easy answer.

I Am Afraid is a networked virtual reality application where multiple people can create interactive sound sculptures using their own voice (for the Daydream platform). Words are recorded and rendered as textual objects in the environment. Non-word sounds can also be recorded and are represented as abstract ball-like objects. The word objects can be played back through touch at any speed, direction, or position using hand controllers. Paper balls loop their sounds when touched. Words and sounds can be drawn, recorded, and played back, creating a layered soundscape that evolves dynamically through interactive and collaborative actions. The application can be used for voice and sound exploration, composition, or performance.

Every story can be transformed and every decision leads to different outcomes. Scary Cabin is the world's first crowd-created, interactive animated movie. Every couple of weeks MashUp Machine releases a new episode--and they ask the public to chime in on their idea of a good story, by mashing up the content that they and/or other people have created. You get to be the director: borrow dialogue and action, weave together various plot lines, and drop characters into different scenes. Be funny. Be dramatic. Be a little evil. Own it. Mash your heart out! The program makes suggestions about camera angles and scene layouts, dialogue and character actions, plot points and story arcs, but it’s ultimately you who holds all the control.

With 360° capabilities, and set at the center of a dance performance, the audience is invited to follow the performers and immerse themselves in this expansive landscape. A bold and technically ambitious pursuit, Tidal Traces envelops the audience in a movement activated space. Three women express tranquility, ominous beauty, and peril through their movements as they circle a midpoint: you. Entangled in a kinetic tension, the viewer becomes the fourth character and composes the dance through their gaze.
